cute brunette girl in a fist coughs

Getting rid of a persistent cough is no easy task, especially if you want to avoid a trip to the pharmacy. But if you’re in a pinch, forget about honey and lemon. We have one natural cough remedy that even a picky eater can get behind: chocolate. (By the way, these medical reasons could explain why you have a chronic cough in the first place.)

That’s right, chocoholics! Chowing down on this delicious dessert can soothe your cough—no medicine required. That’s not the only health benefit of chocolate, either.

But don’t just take our word for it. According to Professor Alyn Morice, a leading expert in cough and respiratory medicine, chocolate is a more effective cough suppressant than codeine syrup. In a new study that compared the two remedies, patients who ate the sweet stuff showed significant improvements in their cough symptoms within two days.

There are two major factors behind our next cough cure. Cocoa naturally contains an ingredient called theobromine, which research has shown can relieve chronic coughing. Plus, when the melted treat forms a sticky coating in your throat, it protects the nerve endings that cause you to cough, experts say.

“Coughing is a medical condition, which affects most people at some point in their lives, and yet no effective treatment exists,” researcher Peter Barnes, a professor at the Imperial College London, said in a news release. “While persistent coughing is not necessarily harmful, it can have a major impact on quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem.”

All the more reason to pop a piece of chocolate the next time your throat feels scratchy. Here are more natural cough remedies you can make from items already in your kitchen.

Don’t fall for all those scary airplane scenes in movies

    Airplane
Of all the things your flight attendant won’t tell you, perhaps the most curious is that airplane travel is now safer than ever. In fact, 2017 saw no fatalities resulting from commercial airline crashes, and a quick look at statistics compiled by the Aviation Safety Network reveals that even as traveling by airplane has become increasingly widespread, the number of fatal accidents has been on a downward trend. Accordingly, many of the scary stories and worrisome warnings you’ve heard are no longer true (or never were in the first place).

    Costco
Big box store members are already smitten with perks like these little-known benefits of having a Costco card. But then there are the products themselves. Not only does Costco have unbeatable prices, but it also carries top-quality options. So when you find a favorite item, it can be devastating to realize it’s no longer carried the next time you stop by.

Part of the reason Costco’s prices are so cheap is that it only carries a limited number of products. Of course, that also means that the store won’t hang onto an item that isn’t selling when it could replace it with something more appealing. Luckily, there’s an easy way to find out if your favorite product is about to be discontinued.

Take a look at the upper right corner of a Costco price tag. If you see an asterisk, that’s a sign that the wholesale store won’t be restocking the item. Maybe the product hasn’t been selling well, or maybe the manufacturer upped its prices. Either way, it could be your last shot to get your hands on that item in-store—at least for now. (Check out these other Costco secrets that will save you money.)

Even if a product disappears from the shelves temporarily, it might pop up again in the future. For instance, seasonal items like holiday gift wrap or certain foods might not appear until the next year, but they’ll show up again once they’re back in season. Still, if you have your sights on a nonperishable item that you know you’ll use up within a few months, might as well stock up on more to make it through the year. Just don’t bother with these things that are actually more expensive at Costco.

    New Tax Law 101

    Tax-forms
The TCJA was enacted to deliver “tax relief to Americans,” according to a statement made by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady upon introducing the law. Technically, however, the TCJA doesn’t provide for new tax deductions (a tax deduction lowers your taxable income), Jason J. Howell, CFP explained to Reader’s Digest. Rather, it mostly accomplishes these three changes: It increases certain tax deductions and credits (which reduce your tax bill after your tax rate’s been applied to your taxable income), makes the deductions available to more Americans, and generally lowers tax rates. And while you’ll notice that your paycheck tax withholdings will drop in 2018, most of the following tax changes won’t affect your filings for April 15, 2018. The true impact of the TCJA will kick in when you file your taxes in 2019.

Check out these things IRS agents won’t tell you about taxes.

Student of medicine examining anatomical model in lab
After your parents have ticked off the last mark on your childhood growth chart, after you’ve stopped outgrowing shoes, and when the horrors of puberty are a distant memory, you may think it’s safe to claim that you’ve “stopped growing.” But there are two significant parts of your body that apparently didn’t get the memo. Once the growth of the rest of your body has slowed to a stop, your nose and your ears continue increasing in size. (So does that make it… three body parts that never stop growing?)

Dr. Ryan Neinstein, a plastic surgery practitioner at NYC Surgical Associates and Neinstein Plastic Surgery, explains what makes these two facial features different from the rest of your body. Dr. Neinstein describes how the multiplication of our cells drives the growth of our bodies. “Most cells in our body stopped multiplying at puberty,” Dr. Neinstein told Reader’s Digest. When the cells throughout our bodies, such as bone, muscle, and fat cells, stop duplicating, we stop growing. This doesn’t mean that cells themselves can’t get larger (they can; it’s how we build muscle) or shrink (they can; it’s how we burn fat). But most of them stop dividing, and in most parts of our body, “the number of cells is ‘locked in'” after puberty, says Dr. Neinstein.

Our noses and ears are unique compared to the rest of our bodies because they’re composed of soft tissue enveloped in cartilage. And it’s this soft tissue that keeps growing throughout our entire lives. “When you look at someone when they’re 80 vs. when they’re 20, they’ll have more cells in their ears and nose,” Dr. Neinstein says. If you’ve noticed that some older people seem to have larger ears and noses, well, this is why.

And no, it’s not just “drooping” due to gravity. Dr. Neinstein says that noses and ears grow up as well as down.

If you’re wondering why hair and nails don’t make the list of parts that don’t stop growing, Dr. Neinstein has an explanation for that, too. Hair and nail growth, he says, is genetic and differs for everyone; for instance, baldness is hereditary. (Of course, there are other reasons you could be losing your hair.) While continued ear and nose growth is consistent, the situation of hair and nails is “not as clear-cut,” Dr. Neinstein says. (No pun intended.)

Next, learn the biological reasons behind some of our wackiest body parts.

    The-Royal-Family-Once-Hid-Its-Crown-Jewels-in-a-Cookie-Tin—Here’s-Why_5689090aj_REX

Judging by how much the British royal family is actually worth, it’s safe to say their Crown Jewels cost a pretty penny. So it’s no surprise that these world-famous Brits will do practically anything to keep those precious gems safe—even if it takes hiding them in a cookie tin.

That may sound strange by today’s standards, but back during World War II, many worried the jewels would fall into the wrong hands. That’s why the royal family decided to stash its Crown Jewels in a metal cookie tin underneath Windsor Castle, a BBC documentary recently revealed.

According to a set of letters between former royal librarian Sir Owen Morshead and Queen Mary, King George VI asked for the gems to be hidden in case of a Nazi invasion. (Check out the entire royal family tree, explained in one easy chart.)

Under King George’s orders, stones from the Imperial State Crown and the Black Prince’s Ruby were placed in the metal tin and buried in two steel-doored chambers underneath Windsor Castle, experts say. And here’s the coolest part: The trapdoor used to access the secret space still exists today.

Up until now, many have speculated that the gems had been hidden in a cave in Wales, in a Canadian vault, or in a secret tunnel during the war, The Times reported. Even Queen Elizabeth II, who spent those years in Windsor Castle, had no clue where the Crown Jewels were buried. Royal expert Alastair Bruce first revealed the findings to her while filming the BBC documentary, The Coronation.

That’s not the only thing you didn’t know about the British monarch. Learn more fascinating facts (and a few scandals!) about Queen Elizabeth II.
